January 8, 1921 Journal and Guide "Truxton News" Prof. Jas. Clarke, an old Portsmouth boy who is now taking a special course at Columbia University, spent Sunday in Truxton, the guest of his friend, Mr. Thos. A. Watkins. 119 Key Road. Despite the inclement weather, Emanuel's Mission A.M.E. Sunday school had a large and encouraging attendance. The lesson was interestingly taught by our superintendent, Mr. Malachi Morse. Strangers, visitors and friends are always welcome to our services. Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Melton, who were recently married, are living at No. 3 Hobson Street. Among the sick at this writing are Mr. Jno. E. Harrison, of Bagley Street, and Mrs. Mary Postles, of Hobson Street. "The Mothers' Club held a very enthusiastic meeting at the residence of Mrs. Reid, Key Road. After the meeting Mrs. Reid served the members with cocoa and cake. ___________________________________________________ "Truxton News" Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Brown, of Hobson Street, spent Sunday visiting in Norfolk. Mrs. M. B. Jackson entertained a few friends at cards on Friday evening. Those enjoying the hospitality of Mrs. Jackson were Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Harvey, Miss Mayme Wright, Miss Nannie B. Stephens and Miss Robinson, all of Portsmouth, and Mr. and Mrs. Waldon, of Washington, D. C. Mr. Jno. Vincent, Mr. Jno. Hall and Bartchie Hall spent Sunday in Truxton, visiting friends. Mr. Al Young spent Sunday afternoon with Mr. Clifton Williams, of Hobson Street. Mr. Mrs. Vernon Smelley have as their house guests Mrs. Smelley's mother and niece, of Philadelphia, PA. The Idle Hour Art Circle met at the residence of Mrs. M. B. Harrison, of Bagley Street. Refreshments were served. There was a large attendance at Emanuel's Mission A. M. E. Sunday school. The lesson was interesting and inspiring. On Sunday, January 30th, at 3 p.m., Dr. Hunter, accompanied by the junior choir, will preach for us. Teachers' meeting of the Truxton Mission A. M. E. Sunday school was held Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. McCoy. The meeting was opened by singing lesson hymn. Prayer was offered by Mr. A. T. Hill. After which there were about thirty minutes spent in lesson study. The lesson was a very interesting one, and some real deep thoughts wee considered. The lesson was then reviewed by our most worthy superintendent, Mr. Malachi Morse. The meeting then was closed by singing "God Be With You 'Till We Meet Again." After which jelly and cake were served by Mrs. McCoy. It was most delicious and was highly appreciated by the ones present, and really did show a true spirit of Methodism. Everybody is invited to our services. They are as follows: Sunday school every Sunday morning at 9 o'clock; praise meeting at 3:30 every Sunday; teachers' meeting at 7 o'clock every Tuesday evening; class meeting every Wednesday night at 7 o'clock. Come one, come all, and help us promote the welfare of God's Kingdom! |
