1921 Journal and Guide "TRUXTON MAY BE CEDED TO COMMONWEATH WITH CRADDOCK The ceding of Truxton back to the State of Virginia along with Craddock, will be provided in the bill introduced by Senator Swanson Thursday and referred to the committee on public grounds and buildings to cede Craddock back to the Commonwealth, if the request of Portsmouth city officials is heeded. A telegram was sent to Senator Swanson requesting that the ceding back to the Commonwealth of Truxton be incorporated in the bill, which, it is hoped, can be passed this session of Congress as a rider on some appropriation bill. Should Congress take action ceding the town of Truxton back to the State of Virginia it would solve the riddle of having a town within a town, it is pointed out, for Truxton lies entirely within the corporate limits of the city of Portsmouth. The settlement has not met with the difficulties that Craddock has, although its status is exactly the same, it is said. In Truxton, municipal affairs are administered by a city manager, who also is responsible for the operation of the public utilities patterned after those of Craddock. There has been no dissatisfaction expressed by the people of Truxton as to their status as citizens of a "town within a town" and consequently, it is pointed out, few people are familiar with the fact that the citizens of Truxton have met and overcome the same obstacles that have confronted the people of Craddock. |
