National Medical Association 

This organization was founded in September 1895 as the National Association of Colored Physicians, Dentists and Pharmacists (NACPDP) by 12 physicians and other health care professionals, primarily from Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. They met in the First Congregational Church during the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta, GA. Robert F. Boyd, M.D. of Nashville, TN, was selected as the President and Miles Vanderhurst Lynk was Vice President. The Secretary was from Virginia. In 1898 the NACPDP met in Louisville, KY and in St. Louis in 1901. No meetings were held in 1896, 1897, 1899, 1900, or 1902. Beginning in 1903 the group began meeting annually and renamed the organization the National Medical Association.

Founded in 1905, the Old Dominion Medical and Surgical Society was established to represent the progressive physicians throughout Virginia and provide a forum for professional discussions on a variety of medical topics. Clinics were conducted at the local black hospitals (Whittaker Memorial and Norfolk Community) during the Conference, as well as social programs. From its inception through the 1930s, the Society met at the Bayshore Hotel in Buckroe Beach, Virginia.

Tidewater Medical Society 

The TMS was founded in 1910 by local physicians in southside Virginia.Initially named the Tri-State Dental Association was founded in 1914, the Interstate Dental Association, which includes members from Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia, held its first meeting at Buckroe Beach, Virginia. Founding members included D. A. Ferguson, J. M. G. Ramsey, A. O. Reid, C. S. Wormley, A. J. Gwathney, G. H. Butcher, J. E . Washington, R. C. Brown, and C. M. Tomilson.
