Burrell
Memorian, Norfolk Community, Richmond Community, and Whittaker
Memorial hospitals represents the traditional black hospital
in its regional location, establishment, funding, service, longevity,
and decline. Moreover, these two hospitals, like others in the
smaller cities and rural communities throughout the South, received
federal funding during the New Deal, specifically the Public
Works Act. And they represented the intersection of local hospitals
and the military by providing health care for African American
servicemen during the Second World War. The establishment, operation
and decline of these hospitals are truly representative of the
history of other black hospitals throughout the South. |
