Dr. D. W. Byrd Served as President of the National Medical Association from 1916-1917.  Born on November 1, 1868 in Ashland, Ohio.
Raised in the public school system in Ashland, Dr. Byrd received an A.B. and an A.M. from Baldwin University in 1888 and 1889. He taught at Rust University in Hot Springs, Mississippi for four years, and later studied Greek at Harvard University. He was served as the chair of the Literary Department at Central Tennessee College (later known as Walden University) in Nashville and later as Dean. Dr. Byrd studied Medicine and Pharmacy at Meharry Medical College, receiving a Ph.G. and M.D., and subsequently taught at Meharry for a few years. In 1902 Dr. Byrd moved to Norfolk, Virginia where he began a successful general medicine practice. He continued taking special courses in medicine in Chicago.
